For most districts and school-based occupational and physical therapists, there has been a monumental shift in best practice standards the past few years. Current research suggests that naturally occurring student interventions and activities produce more positive child outcomes and improve communication between the classroom staff and related service providers. This shift in practice has proven to be a challenge for many IEP team members as they may have made the assumption that OT and PT must have separate goals and objectives. In fact, goals and objectives should be student goals and be directly related to the student’s educational needs as identified in the Present Level of Academic and Functional Performance (PLAAFP). All team members are responsible for the development of collaborative team goals.
